Virtual access to data

To truly understand the nature of earthquakes, seismologists need a lot of data – from data on historical earthquakes to information about seismicity caused by human activities such as drilling or fracking. Because collecting such data is too resource intensive for a single institution, SERA offers virtual access to data and products in seismology, engineering seismology and anthropogenic seismicity. These are made available to scientists and other professionals.

Work packages

In brief	EMSC provides real time earthquake information and earthquake products ranging from authoritative locations (for 88% of the located events), moment tensors, global macroseismic data, to information related to earthquake’s impact (qualitative impact estimates, mapping of the felt area, rapid detection of felt earthquakes, geo-located pics). EMSC also hosts the RESORCE database a reference database for specific Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPE) studies as well as a Quake Catcher Network (QCN) server to ease and favor the developments of citizen operated networks in the Euro-Med region. EMSC will extend and strengthen its current services and strive to further diversify access mechanisms to serve broader use types, such as a web services for accessing macro-seismic data. A web interface will be made available to QCN users to monitor their network performances.

In brief	ORFEUS has evolved into one of the largest infrastructures in the world that provides seismological data to the scientific research community in strong collaboration with European seismological observatories. It is a networked system of observatory infrastructures, data archives and services. A key component is the federated, distributed European Integrated Waveform Data Archive (EIDA) that transparently connects 10 large data centers in Europe. This work package aims among others to support the research community by providing transparent access tools, quality information and refined (tailor-made) data discovery across EIDA.

In brief	The access to data and services for engineering seismology include the European Strong Moton Database (ESM), European Archive of Historical Earthquake Data (AHEAD), and the European Database of Seismogenic Faults (EDSF). This work package will strengthen and coordinate its currently separated, and intrinsically diverse, services to provide optimized access to data and tools for the seismological and the engineering seismology communities. The plan is also, to extend the functionalities of the existing services and to provide experimental integrated services that enable the interaction among the three data sources.

In brief	EFEHR, the European facility for earthquake hazard and risk is designed as a sustainable community resource and service for European Earthquake Hazard and Risk. EFEHR facilitates global, open-access to online data, interactive products and services relevant for seismic hazard and risk in Europe. Under this work package, EFEHR will continue to collect and improve datasets, including the exposure data (European building stock inventory), vulnerability and the risk datasets. EFEHR will provide access to several products developed within SERA, specially the updated ESHM18 model developed in JRA3 (LINK). Quality control procedures will be introduced to the relevant databases (e.g., active faults, earthquake catalogues, seismogenic, strain rate models, ground motion prediction equations). Investigate future user requirements for advance information services that will help to shape the portal development.

In brief	IS-EPOS platform contains unique datasets related to anthropogenic seismicity (AS), called “episodes”, comprehensively describing a geophysical process, induced or triggered by human technological activity, which poses hazard for populations, infrastructure and the environment. Presently IS-EPOS data can be processed only on the platform and cannot be downloaded. The platform as well as metadata structure of the integrated data will be accordingly developed, to allow VA users downloading available data. This work package will also provide a help desk where users will find technical and scientific support. User guide will be improved according to the new platform features and also the new type of user guide (the short movie) will be added.
